Review
If there’s a game that redefined several different genres on the PC Gaming market more than Battlefield 1942, you’d be hard pressed to find it. Online multiplayer, first person shooter, action… all changed drastically after the release of D.I.C.E.’s beautiful game.
The game sets you as one of a number of different players in the World War II field, either Americans, British, or Russian forces for the Allied teams, and German or Japanese forces for the Axis ones. Essentially, you and up to 65 other people can drop into anyone of more than a dozen maps set from Europe to the Pacific. Once in a game, anything is game… you can drive any vehicle, fly any plane, shoot anyone using any weapon. This level of freedom was unheard of in a game until Battlefield 1942 came along, and has not been seen much since.
The Battlefield 1942 Soundtrack features majestic fanfares in the themes opening and in the loading screens, but also rather eerie but fantastic piano renditions for the stats screen and mission briefing screen.
