Not terribly different from the original Quake, Quake II focused most of its energy on using the new 3D chips gamers were grabbing up and creating one of the first online communities dedicated to mapping and modding.
Quake II gave birth to the mapper, the skinner, and the modder. Quake II provided tools and allowed the community to directly effect the game through skins, new maps, and new game types. This helped Quake II's longevity and helped it to compete with other major releases on the PC platform.
The Quake II Soundtrack features hard rock music and an upbeat tempo, a perfect score for this fast paced first-person shooter.
